In a clean, oil-free, high-vacuum environment, a cold-cathode ion gun tilted relative to the sample surface is used to emit an Ar+ beam with energy exceeding the binding energy of the sample material, thereby continuously bombarding the sample surface. This bombardment causes atoms from the topmost layer of the sample to be sputtered off, ultimately yielding a thin-film sample prepared by etching.
